Tim Berkel once said “the socks were my first choice in foot support and protection for the big challenging marathon that Iwas to undertake at Copenhangen for a possible back to back victory. I am adament about wearing not only a comfortable sockfor the long 42.2km marathon but I am also wanting a sock that will suppupport my achilles/ soleus area which tend to get tight over the long haul of a marathon.  I knew with this comfort and suppport of a great socks like this that it would hold me in good steed to go forth and do my best ever marathon time minus my 4 minute penatly of 2:42 to launch me into another consecutive victory of Challenge Copenhagen.

Michelle Wu’s Nepean Report

16 November 2011

Last weekend I raced the Nepean Triathlon - Australia’s oldest triathlon race beginning back in 1982!  This year was the 30th running of the event and my 2nd time competing.  I raced it last year and won.  The race is unique in that the boys are handicapped.  This year the girls had about a 11:30min head start.  The first across the line (male or female) gets a extra prize bonus.  The 1k swim, 30k 2 lap bike, and 10k 2 lap run is held at Penrith’s Regatta Centre - a great venue mostly used for rowing.  It was going to be a tough ask to back up my win from last year, with superstar and World Champion Mel Rollison having a hit out.  Throw in the ever improving Matilda Reynolds and a bunch of speedy ITU Juniors, I was going to have to move fast if I wanted to podium!  All my races this year have been long course and 70.3 events.  This was my first short race in a very long time!  In fact, Nepean last year was my last short distance race!  I needed to grow some fast twitch fibres quickly!  Having only done Taiwan 70.3 in super hot and humid conditions 7 days prior though, I was a little worried.  I wasn’t sleeping very well, felt quite flat, and had a sore lower back thanks to sleeping overnight on the plane home from Taiwan in a rather awkward position!  I got even more of a scare when I started to feel a sore throat coming on the Friday before the race.  I even contemplated telling my parents I didn’t want to make the drive up to Sydney on Saturday morning, but I wanted to catch up with a few people at the race, so I decided to just go there and then decide.  I registered and later had a great dinner with good friend Mel.  It was so good to catch up with her and was just what I needed as for the first time the whole week, I was now fired up for the race!  Better late than never I guess! :P

Michelle and Mel in a dress rehearsal for Phuket

Race morning dawned with perfect conditions and the gun went off at 7am for the entire field of females - the elites, the age groupers, the beginners - all off together!  Fortunately I got off to a good start and eventually tucked myself in behind a small group of girls swimming at a good pace.  Two junior girls though got away which I was unaware of, so I exited a bit over a minute down on the first female.  I wasn’t too concerned though as I trusted my riding ability which has improved a fair bit this year.  Out on the bike, I just hammered away. I’m sure my HR was sky rocketting, but it was only 30ks!  Not 90!  No holding back or pacing here Shell!  Mel passed me fairly early on, but I was determined to at least try to stay with her or at least keep here in sight.  I was joined by Matilda on the ride and we entered T2 together, about 40sec down from Mel.  That was the closest I would get to her for the remainder of the race as she runs off at sub 3:30 pace!  Makes everybody else’s run look like a sunday morning jog!  Gee thanks Mel! :)  Anyway, so it was now a battle for 2nd between Matilda and myself.
I took off out of T2 fast and hard before settling into a more sustainable pace.  However, I wasn’t feeling too great after only 3ks where Matilda caught me and went past. At this point, I knew that I was going to have to pace myself and run smart if I was going to (a) finish the 10ks strong and (b) have any chance of grabbing 2nd!  Matilda was running strong and at a pace which was neither too fast nor too slow…..so I tucked myself right in behind her.  At about 6ks, I thought about taking a risk and picking up the pace, but I decided against it.  I didn’t want to blow up further up the road and creep home, possibly losing 2nd place!  I wanted to finish strong, saving myself for a sprint finish if needed.  So I stayed there tucked behind, probably annoying the heck out of her (sorry Tils!) right up until we had about 500m to go.  I was still feeling comfortable (so to speak!) and finally increased my pace for the first time.  It wasn’t pretty that’s for sure, but I got the job done, securing 2nd place just 5sec ahead.  Super Mel took the win (not surprisingly!) and also beat the boys.  At least the girls won the battle of the sexes!
Once again, thank you all for the support!  It was tough finding my fast twitch fibres after nothing but 70.3 racing, but I loved it!  I will probably be incorporating some non-drafting shorter races next year into my calendar rather than just 70.3 events :)  There are plenty of choices in the USA which is fantastic.
It’s now heads down and onto the next challenge - 70.3 Asia/Pacific Champs in wonderful Phuket, Thailand on 4th December!  Going to be a tough tough race!  Heat, humidity, killer hills and a super competitive field! Bring it on I say!
